Why does childish gambino like asian girls

It boils a person down to just skin color. It robs a person of personality, character, interests, experiences and opinions. When you view people only in terms of their race, you do them the great disservice of objectifying them. This particular form of objectification, or fetishization, places stereotypical sexual expectations on Asian women. Whether or not an Asian girl is dating a white boy for his European ancestry, a lot of observers simply assume the worst. This assumption leads to misplaced aggression and hurtful accusations.

Needless to say, this problem only exists because, as much as we like to believe it has progressed, our society has a long way to go. Yellow fever is more than just a physical preference. This projection of generalized ideals onto individuals makes yellow fever a dangerously subtle form of discrimination. Obviously, the men on OKCupid are extreme examples of this fetishzation — most of us would never be that misogynistic, racist, or just generally repulsive.

But what about Childish Gambino, a public figure and entertainer? Although this type of low-intensity yellow fever is less revolting than the OKCupid comments and thus more common, making broad sweeping statements about a certain race is unequivocally and unconditionally myopic, and taking these pre-conceived notions and applying them to individuals, especially in the context of something as personal as a romantic relationship, is offensive and hurtful.

Despite all the negative consequences it presents for individuals and for society, yellow fever engenders within me a more complex discomfort.

After all, I still listen to Childish Gambino. I still scrolled through the entire Creepy White Guys Tumblr, unable to stop reading the racist objectifications. Well, there are some personal factors. As a 12 year old, I became bitterly conscious of what the definition of desirability and beauty was in this homogenous community and that I did not fulfill that definition. I would watch Friends with my older sister and internally register that Ross, Joey, and Chandler never dated characters that looked at us.

I would read through Seventeen magazine and CosmoGirl and wonder if I could use their make-up advice on my own complexion. At least Jackie Chan and Bruce Lee were household names that my middle school friends and I recognized, but ask us the name of a cool, famous Asian woman actor?

Today, seven years later, society has made huge advances in the representation of Asian females in various walks of life. This kind of identity confusion is one that many of us are familiar with. Sometimes it hurts and sometimes it makes me mad, but at the same time, I know exactly what they mean. You deal with it, and get on with your life. Glover is not dealing with it.

Rather than celebrate what makes him different from other artists, he falls back on run-of-the-mill hip hop posturing and lazy rhymes. Skip to main content. Search form Search. Victoria Yue. Suggested Reads. Kid Koala. Beats Per Minute.

Actually I need your help trying to understand something here. I rarely even listen to rap. I have dated all women, but I happen to like Asian Women most of all. What I am trying to understand is. What am I missing? Come on man He's talking about a yellow porsche. And the Virginia Tech line is not lazy. Thats a very clever line. The beauty of rap is a rapper can say things that goofy pop star can't. Im sure he meant no disrespect with that line.

Wow, ur really offended. Like actually offended. A few things to realize about rap in general. One thing is that it's alot like comedy, which glover is a comedian, consider that most double entente in rap are actually jokes.
