Having bidden an intermittent farewell to his fans in a concert on September 8, the Portuguese singer and winner of the Eurovision Song Contest is fighting for his life in a hospital in Lisbon. The family has otherwise refused comment.
According to media reports, year-old Salvador Sobral is at the intensive care unit of the Santa Cruz hospital in Lisbon. His condition is described as "stable, but critical. An estimated audience of million will have seen this year's Contest which was broadcast live in the 42 participating countries and in China, Kazakhstan and Kosovo.
The 26 finalists performed live in front of an audience of nearly 10, inside the International Exhibition Centre in the Ukrainian capital. Ukrainian Eurovision winners Jamala and Ruslana performed new material during the interval between performances and voting.
Former X-Factor contestant Lucie Jones provided the UK with its highest score since , finishing in 15th place with points. Salvador Sobral's poignant song Amar Pelos Dois emerged victorious with points, with the year-old describing his win as a "victory for music".
Portugal are the longest-running contestants never to have won the competition, despite trying for 53 years. Amor Pelos Dois was written by Sobral's sister, Luisa, who finished third in Portugal's version of Pop Idol — the same contest that the Eurovision winner finished seventh in. Sobral; underwent a heart transplant in December of that year — and returned to the Eurovision stage in May to perform with Brazilian singer Caetano Veloso. More recently Sobral has returned to music, releasing his second album Paris, Lisboa on 29 March of this year.
The album, which features him singing in four languages, went on to top the album chart in Portugal. The singer explained ahead of the release how his heart transplant operation encouraged him to begin working on new material.
