Having the UL stamp on your product is an insurance policy for you, the retailer and the manufacturer of the product. It will pay to research your niche or market in advance and see if UL is expected or not. Did you get the UL listing for your products? Was it ultimately worthwhile? Obtaining UL Certification is important because it demonstrates manufacturers and service providers competency. Consumers want to know the company they hire to install their equipment is qualified to do the job right, and that they take the time to ensure that all of the products they install are tested and meet safety standards. Only thing I would like to add is i've heard that some insurance policies will not cover your house from fire if it was started by a device that wasn't NRTL approved. Does a device need these certs. Don't forget the FCC has requirements as well, for instance anything with a microcontroller will most likely need testing Wall Mart, for example, would probably not sell your product without it being certified to their satisfaction.
